How Chinese numbers work

Chinese numbers group large values by 万 (10,000), not by thousands. That is the single most important difference for English speakers: 100,000 is 十万, and 12,345,678 is 一千二百三十四万五千六百七十八.

This Chinese numbers converter writes values from 0 through 99,999,999 in Chinese characters, adds base-tone Pinyin and gives a literal reading. Turn on financial characters for cheque and contract forms, or use 两 in quantity contexts.

Internal zero runs become one 零, while trailing zeros are omitted. The chart includes 0–10, the tens and the place values supplied for this tool.

12,345,678 = 一千二百三十四万五千六百七十八

The output keeps base tones: 一 is shown as yī. In spoken tone sandhi, it can become yì before first-, second- and third-tone syllables, or yí before a fourth-tone syllable.

Chinese numbers FAQ

Why does Chinese use 万 instead of a thousand grouping?

Chinese groups large numbers in units of 10,000. For example, 100,000 is 十万 and 1,000,000 is 一百万.

When should I use 两 instead of 二?

两 is used for two as a quantity before a measure word, as in 两个. 二 remains the digit itself and is used in counting, ordinal and decimal contexts. The toggle applies 两 before 百, 千 or 万; it does not change the standalone digit 2.

What are financial Chinese characters?

They are anti-fraud forms used on cheques and contracts, such as 壹, 贰, 叁 and 拾. Turn on the financial-character option to see them.

Why is there only one 零 in a run of zeroes?

Internal zeroes are represented by 零 once for the run. A trailing zero does not add 零, so 1,100 is 一千一百.

Does the Pinyin show tone sandhi?

No. The converter keeps the base tones from the reference data. In speech, 一 may change tone depending on the following syllable.
